A Day at the Saltsong spa

The Saltsong spa

Located on the marshlands of Portsmouth harbour, UK, the Saltsong spa encapsulates the history of the site with their salt-making industry as well as keeping in mind endangered wildlife that surrounds it, choosing methods of construction and waste that benefits both parties.

Saltmaking

Using the historic saltmaking methods of making salt in an up-draught kiln, part of the historic integrity of the site can remain intact.

Lifecycle

In order to create a sustainable project, using materials that have been sourced locally is a must. The lifecycle of the salt can also be re-used for other purposes once its intended purpose has been fulfilled. Considering the future impact of the building is necessary in creating sustainable designs.

Risk of Flood

Taking into consideration the type of landscape that this project is situated on, there is a high chance that there could be a flood. This has been taken into consideration within the design through elevating the structure as well as reusing the rainwater for grey water facilities.

Exhibition

Creating a large 2x1 meter exhibition that encapsulates the project as a whole. Capturing various perspectives and features of not only the Saltsong spa but also the environment surrounding it, its users, the wildlife, and the various activities that occur near the location.

Assembly

Creating a salt door system that re-uses old salt for greywater, as well as rainwater to create the desired effect, the salt door is an effective way to create privacy that slowly dissipates in time.
